Caution with Driveways

Being extra cautious when driving in a driveway, may prevent your vehicle from being damaged, prevent you from being at fault in an accident with another vehicle, and reduce the risk of pedestrian injury

Watch out for pedestrians - double check your mirrors as well as your blind spots for pedestrians walking across or near the driveway when pulling into and out of driveways.  Low speed, 'off-road' locations including car parks and driveways have been identified as high-risk sites for accidents involving small children.

Be wary of other drivers - When waiting for a car to vacate from a driveway, or when reversing out of a car space, look out for drivers who may want to drive around you.

Warn drivers not to put too much reliance on reversing cameras or sensors. “It is a great tool to help you see behind your car, but it won’t stop you from hitting something.”

“We need to ensure drivers are educated about how to use reversing cameras correctly, prevention must be the focus, and awareness and education are key to this”.

“Adults need to talk to children about road safety in ways they will understand ... setting rules about playing away from footpaths and driveways can keep them out of harm.”

Therefore If you are pulling out of a driveway, whether it is a residential driveway or from a parking lot, and into traffic, you must always yield right of way to the drivers in the street.
Take it slowly at first. Reversing using your mirrors is more complicated than reversing while looking backward through the rear window. ...
Your mirrors won't cover your blind spots, so be careful.
