L.A.M.S - What does this mean?

Rebecca Saunders

In preparation for driving it is essential that motorists are aware of the L.A.M.S principles and apply them before beginning their journey by positioning themselves comfortably and safely inside the vehicle.

LOCK THE DOORS

Check to see that passengers are all seated inside the vehicle and fastened securely, lock the front and rear doors and place the key in the ignition.

ADJUST THE SEAT

Adjust the seat for comfort, in addition to positioning yourself within reach of all the pedals and controls, ensure that you have a clear view of what is in front of you, and adjust the steering wheel for reach and hand position.

MIRRORS

Adjust the rear-view and side-view mirrors. Correctly adjusting side mirrors is something that every driver should do, every time they drive. Taking a minute to properly align your mirrors is always worthwhile. Here's how to adjust your car mirrors correctly:

The Rearview Mirror is intended to provide a clear view of the lane behind you. Adjust it so the entire rear window is visible from the driver’s seat with minimal head movement. The goal is to be able to quickly glance from the road in front of you to the road behind you without having to move or turn your body.

Side View Mirrors: When it comes to the side mirrors, the point where the road disappears on the horizon should be located in the middle horizontal point of the mirror. Once this is set, tilt your head left and right accordingly and move the mirror sideways to the point where you can only just see the side of your car. You do not need to see the side of your own car it is more important to see as much of the road next to your car as possible, so, therefore, position the mirror to see the least amount of your car.

SEATBELTS

In closing, it’s essential that all passengers that are seated inside a vehicle ensure that they are safely and securely fastened by their seat belt restraints (Everyone in a vehicle, including the driver and all passengers, must wear a correctly fitted and adjusted seatbelt.) According to Transport for NSW, while it has been compulsory to wear seatbelts in NSW since 1971, each year on average, approximately 30 drivers and passengers are killed and 220 injured as a result of not wearing available seatbelts. (Many of these injures could have been prevented if seatbelt safety was followed.)

These 4 simple guidelines are designed to prevent all passengers from injury and save lives. The safety of our Onroad community is important so please take care and drive safe.
